Favorite Song Ever

Old pirates, yes, they rob i;
Sold I to the merchant ships,
Minutes after they took i
From the bottomless pit.
But my hand was made strong
By the and of the almighty.
We forward in this generation
Triumphantly.
Wont you help to sing
These songs of freedom? -
cause all I ever have:
Redemption songs;
Redemption songs.

Emancipate yourselves from mental slavery;
None but ourselves can free our minds.
Have no fear for atomic energy,
cause none of them can stop the time.
How long shall they kill our prophets,
While we stand aside and look? ooh!
Some say its just a part of it:
Weve got to fulfil de book.

Wont you help to sing
These songs of freedom? -
cause all I ever have:
Redemption songs;
Redemption songs;
Redemption songs.
---
/guitar break/
---
Emancipate yourselves from mental slavery;
None but ourselves can free our mind.
Wo! have no fear for atomic energy,
cause none of them-a can-a stop-a the time.
How long shall they kill our prophets,
While we stand aside and look?
Yes, some say its just a part of it:
Weve got to fulfil de book.
Wont you help to sing
Dese songs of freedom? -

OJ Prize Witheld

And I guess its not coming.....

It seems that karma has finally caught up to the guy whom we were all pretty sure did it. Late last night OJ Simpson was found guilty on 12 charges including kidnapping and armed robbery, all totaled he faces life in prison. Maybe Ron Goldman will get some peace now, or maybe  he will realize he will never see that money. Either way I will never get my OJ prize.

This Week's Sign the Apocalypse is Upon Us: The Numbers Don't Lie

A couple weeks ago my buddy Evan said Tim you should blog something,
"you haven't written anything in a while" so I sat down while in
wonderful Boyers, PA and tried to come up with something. Well
Congress gave me something. The failure of Roll Call 674, better known
as "The Plan to Save the Economy". It amazes me that they voted on a
plan that they didn't have the votes for. Im amazed still that the
Republican party broke with the Bush Administration and voted against
it. But what I guess what I'm even more surprised at is the fact that
so many Democrats found themselves siding with the Administration.
what I really love is the finger pointing and yes I'm biased but the
numbers don't lie and it didn't fail on the backs of Democrats 60% of
those represented voted in favor of it as opposed to the 32.8% that
voted for it form the other side of the aisle. Check out the numbers,
In an election year I thought politicians can be this stubborn, this
isn't a time for partisan politics its a time for urgency. At any rate
the failure to pass led to a 700 point drop in the Dow Jones and smart
people like Warren Buffett are saying the the Government needs to get
there stuff together. I think I'm moving my money and reducing my
401K contributions. It has to bounce back.

Sara Bareilles, Maroon 5 and the Counting Crows

So I spent Saturday evening with my friend Melinda watching a concert
@ Nissan Pavillion. Counting Crows is on of my all time favorite bands
so when I heard they were coming to town w/ Maroon 5 and Sara
Bareilles I knew I had to check it out. So I bought tickets invited a
friend and off I went. The show was awesome Bareilles played a short
set but was really good and has a surprisingly high quality voice,
it's a shame that so many artists can't sing live that I'm surprised
when I see one that can. The time between artists were unusually long
averaging 30-45 minutes, for a venue that stops shows @ 11p thats a
lot of valuable time being spent doing nothing.

Maroon 5 was on next, I have to suck up for Adam Levine's falsetto, I
love his lyrics but that high pitch can get old fast. They did a great
Beatles cover of Oh! Darling from the Abbey Road album. They played
the usual suspects; Sunday Morning, She Will be Loved, Wont Go Home
Without You etc. I love that they have so much energy when they
perform. The nice thing about a band like Maroon 5 is that @ only two
studio albums they have enough music to headline an event but not so
much that you don't get to hear you favorite tracks because they were
lost in the multitude of music in the artists catalog.

Last was the Counting Crows who played a really efficient set.
Sometimes with the Crows you don't get to hear your favorite songs
because their catalog is so extensive, but that night they played most
of the classics. They played a few tracks from Saturday Night Sunday
Morning their new cd but not too much, their new songs are good but
people want to hear Rain King, Mr. Jones, Last December etc, I wish
they would have played Good Night LA but hey you can't play everything
every night.

Top Memorable Things:

Paying $30 bucks for premier parking

AC in car watching people stumble over the rope fence between the
annex parking lot and the main parking and seeing one girl flash a
"show" and one busting her tail

Group of 7 preppy women who wouldnt sit down during the Maroon 5
performance and couldn't rock on beat

Weird family who bought their very young children to an adult concert
and were upset about the language

Same family; Dad embarrasses family and amuses crowd by dancing
ridiculously @ the beginning of the Maroon 5 set until his wife made
him sit down

Woman next to us whose shirt had nipple lighting, hilarious!!

Adam Duritz who I swore was drunk confusing the crowd by breaking into
Rain King in the middle of Mr. Jones and then coming back to Rain King
to finish the song. I swore he was drunk or high when he did it. But
it worked okay.

End of the night some woman where go-go boots drukenly trying to
navigate throught the loose gravel parking lot w/o killing herself

4 Weddings in 4 Weeks

So here it goes on on my 4th wedding in 4 weeks and this one is gonna send it out with a bang. First up we had Amanda Glazebook, the Cousin Ashley, next was Emily Smith (had to take pics at that one) and last but not least Chris Stokes (Stokes) and Lauren Chesnutt (L-Boogie). I think I'm most excited about this one because I have seen it all unfold from 2000 (Geology 101) to today. I told Chris if he didn't hurry up and get married I was gonna fight him. The man found a good woman. So here is how the trip to Cali for the Stokes/Chesnutt Wedding started.

1. Flight from DC to Cali on Virgin America. Flight was scheduled for 7 am we didn't leave till 845 am.

2. Arrived in Cali at 1031am (PST) rented a car and drove to the Mothership Apple HQ in Cupertino CA. I came, saw, shopped, got an official apple badge ate some fresh sushi (yes the ship has its own sushi bar)

3. Left Cupertino on my way to Sacramento a nice 2 hour drive. Listened to some Jason Mraz, Roots, and Israel and the New Breed.

4. Found out that California has speed limits of 70 mph on the highway that rocks.

5. 1 hr in stopped at Starbucks and discovered the pecan cookie that happens to be great when eaten warm. Caffeine and sugar rush complete

6. I got back on the road for the second leg of the trip and

7. Finally at about 4 pm  arrived at my destination Holiday Inn - Capital Heights, Sacramento CA.

8. Let the fun begin

Song of the Day: Patty Griffin:Up To The Mountain (MLK Song)

I went up to the mountain
Because you asked me to
Up over the clouds
To where the sky was blue
I could see all around me
Everywhere
I could see all around me
Everywhere

Sometimes I feel like
I've never been nothing but tired
And I'll be walking
Till the day I expire
Sometimes I lay down
No more can I do
But then I go on again
Because you ask me to

Some days I look down
Afraid I will fall
And though the sun shines
I see nothing at all
Then I hear your sweet voice, oh
Oh, come and then go, come and then go
Telling me softly
You love me so

The peaceful valley
Just over the mountain
The peaceful valley
Few come to know
I may never get there
Ever in this lifetime
But sooner or later
It's there I will go
Sooner or later
It's there I will go

// Great song, get it here. Heard it on an episode of Grey's Anatomy and had to have it. She sings it like the weigh of the world is on her shoulders but she is steady pushing through. The song was written for MLK and I have no doubt that on some days he felt just like these words. //

Dirty Dishes

“A full plate is married, an empty one a widow”

Jane didn’t mean to.
It was an accident.
He was cheating,
She accidentally caught him.

It had been too long, happened too often.
This wasn’t the first time she caught him.
It would be the last.
5 years 6 months 23 days together, married.
He begged for her forgiveness.
Jane screamed for an explanation.
He couldn’t give one.
Jane wouldn’t forgive.
She stabbed him,
Killed him with an unclean knife.
Soiled from that morning’s break

The Next Big Thing

For those of us always looking for some relaxing music please look no further than Melody Gardot and her album Worrisome Heart. She reminds me of Norah Jones in fluxed with something I cant quite put my finger on. Maybe Diana Krall but not quite there, regardless its good music. Relaxing and wistful with a little more power than Jones offers. She also has a little more bluegrass twang to her and a good band behind her that reminds me of  some old Ray Charles at times. The funny thing about me finding this album is that the first song was the iTunes free song of the week. I checked it out and liked it. Then being the wikipedia addict that I am I looked her up. Turns out that she is handicapped she has a nervous system disorder that makes her hypersensitive to sound and noise and she has trouble sitting while performing because of injuries from a car accident. But listen to the CD and you will never know or imagine any of that. She sounds amazing if nothing else take the free download because its good music perfect for a rainy day, or settling down  from a frantic one.

Track listing;
1 Worrisome Heart
2 All that I need is Love
3 Gone
4 Sweet Memory
5 Some Lessons
6 Quiet Fire
7 One Day
8 Love Me Like a River Does
9 Goodnite
10 Twilight

Saturday, February 23, 2008

I am only 26 years old and have not experienced many Presidential campaigns. In those I have experienced I have usually only been interested in the general election and not the primaries because the nominee selection process has never been interesting or intriguing to me and it always seems that there hasn't been any real question as to who the nominee is going to be. I remember the first election I ever saw it was 1988 George H.W Bush defeating Michael Dukakis. I was in elementary school I think the first or second grade, I knew nothing about the issues or the candidates I just knew who won and lost. Fast forward to 1992 I was in the 6th grade my country had just come out of Desert Storm the economy was down and Bush was starting to look like he might not have an easy reelection. Bush lost to a Governor from Arkansas named William J. Clinton whom I knew only because he played the sax on the Arsenio Hall show during his campaign and appeared the Rock the Vote on MTV, but that was cool enough for me I was an 11 year old kid happy someone was speaking to me on forums that I watched. Despite all of the scandals that happened in his Administration he is still my favorite President because he is the first one that made an impression on me. The older I have gotten and the more I have learned about his policy and his administration the more I like him. He is to me what JFK was to my parent’s generation.

President Clinton's Administration bought me something else, Hillary Rodham Clinton(HRC) a First Lady who was more involved publicly in an administration than any prior first lady. She was smart, highly educated, well spoken and a passionate advocate. She wrote books, did speaking engagements, and reached out to the public at grassroots level on matters that were important to the public. She took up the causes of children, families and the lower class and ran with it. Anyone who knocks who resume, abilities, contributions or her qualifications is crazy, I think that in 2000 when the Clinton Administration ended everyone new we could see the Clinton family again occupying the White House, making history as the first woman President. That a large percentage of the population even considered that a possibility in the male driven society that we live in is a testament to what people see in her as a person. The truth is she could have probably made a run at the White House without having ever been a Senator but she built her resume and showed people that she was a politician. Being a Senator is not being the President but it allows people to view her judgement on issues and her rationale for decision making and thats an important part of running for President especially when your are going to have to deal with all the craziness of being a woman running for President.

Now after all of that most people probably think that I'm voting for HRC and I'm not, she had my vote until 2004 and the fact that she lost it isn't even a reflection on her. At the DNC convention at the Fleet Center in Boston, MA in 2004 I watched an unknown state legislator from Illinois named Barack Obama captivate myself and a country for 20 minutes (I still keep that speech on my iPod). He was a fresh face with good ideas and oratory skills that reminded me of a Baptist preacher. In January 2005 he took office in the US Senate and the whispers started about whether or not he would or even should run for President.

A lot of the knocks on Senator Obama are true. His resume does lack depth and he does lack some of the leadership experience of his opponents. He has been a Senator for under 4 years and he had 7 years as a state legislator. But the American public has not always voted for experience. George H.W Bush had more experience and a better resume than Bill Clinton. And John Kerry and Al Gore had better track records in better decision making and were definitely more intelligent than George W Bush and still lost. I'm not saying that voting one way or the other is right, just making the point that it hasn't always mattered to the American public. The truth is not matter what your experience sitting in the chair is a whole separate ball game, and while the President has final say the most important thing you do as President is surround yourself with competent and qualified people that will give you good advice. Its why I hope that if Obama wins he finds a place for Hillary Clinton in administration if not as VP then in the Cabinet, and I think he is smart enough to do that. He is a breath of fresh air in politics at a time when the public seems to be tired of seeing the same old faces and he is very inspirational and although words aren't solutions, it should not be overlooked that the power to inspire, and engage the electorate should not be overlooked. I can't remember at time when people were more passionate, engaged, and responsive to the educational process. This is not all because of Obama but he is a large part of it, and I think that is a quality often lacking from the Executive office. Then there is the elephant in the room, he is Black and I will not pretend that the fact that there is a candidate that looks like me doesn't affect my decision. If I didn't think he was qualified his ethnicity wouldn't matter but I do so it does. If it was Jesse Jackson or Al Sharpton running I wouldn't vote for them, but Obama I believe will do the job. I'm not sure I ever really believed that an African American would be President and I was pretty sure that we would see a White woman first and we still may but I'm going with Obama because I believe that he will be best for the country.

In a perfect situation you don't get two candidates of this magnitude in the same election. These are two very strong personalities who in some ways are very similar and in others very different. They are both very polarizing to their respective supporters and while not having a candidate in place prior to the convention could be distracting I don't believe that it will kill the party. We are in the unique position of having two very good candidates vying for the nomination. For me personally I can be happy either way my candidates are rock stars both capable of unbelievable popularity, potential and success. It is now up to the American people to have their say on which one gets the nod.

Nothing Better to Do

So apparently our wonderful legislators have nothing better to do than talk steroids. Wednesday we had Roger Clemens and his trainer in front of Congress to talk about than steroid use its a game of he said she said. Everyone has found a story and they are sticking to it, so with no proof, evidence and no evidence that Clemens is planning to change his story we have a complete waste of time. There is a war in Iraq, Afghanistan an election falling mortgage rates, and gas prices that should be illegal and yet the best that Congress can come up with is hearings on steroids. I think what makes me the most upset is that I truly don't understand why they care or why they think its an issue for Congress to handle. Those on the opposite side of my view will likely use the following views to justify Congress' actions; the integrity of the game and the impact of steroids on youth, notice neither of these mentions the law. Anybody that thinks that baseball has any integrity in its current incarnation is crazy. In 1994 baseball went on strike for a year and when they came back the fans didn't come with them. Then in 1998 Mark McGuire and Sammy Sosa went on a tear. They were both chasing Roger Maris' single season home run record and the fans came back for the excitement. If you remember that year remember what McGuire and Sosa looked like and go look at what they looked like prior, these guys were huge I mean if you couldn't tell they were on something... but baseball and baseball fans looked the other way, no tests no rules didn't matter. Steroid pumped hitters were putting butts in the seats and if thats what it took then thats what it took, and now here we are in 2008 and everyone wants to act indignant like they didn't know what was going on. I say whatever... baseball is about entertainment and if a grown man wants to put a needle in his butt that will make his testicles shrink, give back acne, and all sorts of other unpleasantries then so be it. It's not right, but I watch baseball to be entertained and if that's what they want to do I don't believe it warrants congressional hearings. And by the way can someone tell me how Barry Bonds has never ended up before Congress. As for the children this goes back to athlete's being role models... guess what they are not. They hit balls, make baskets and score points, none of those thing warrant admiration. I think blaming athletes for steroid use is a cop out. Have you ever seen an athlete say "be like me do steroids and make the majors"? No, pro athletes don't give kids steroids, coaches do. They entice them by saying steroids will make you make you like insert athlete name here. I say forget the athletes I blame the parents. People always blame the environmental flaws of society for the degradation of the American family, but I think parents let the family down by letting TV raise their children making famous people default role models. Some how in the race to fix society Congress found their way to baseball... like they have nothing better to do.

Super Bowl Sunday Bet

3:55pm PST
So I am at the resort (The Grandview) watching the SB with friends. Im loving Vegas, I placed my first bet today, I put $60 on the Giants with the points. Hopefully I will win some money Im so sick of seeing the Patriots win games year after year, however if they win I want them to win by less than 12 points so that they don't cover the spread.

4:10pm PST
Great catch by Amani Toomer way to drag your feet on the way out of bounds. But the G-Men need to stop accumulating penalties.

4:13pm PST
Steve Smith (USC alum) needs to catch the ball so that Eli doesn't throw interceptions.

4:17pm PST
Great stop by the Giants D. Way to bail out the offense.

4:54pm PST
Halftime. The Giants are playing it tight, their Defense is holding tight and getting alot of pressure on Brady my money looks pretty safe right now.

5:31pm PST
You should not be able to use a tv timeout to decide if you want to challenge a play

5:41pm PST
How hard is it to tackle Kevin Faulk... geez

6:02pm PST
what you play..."I play the oboe", Chester Pitts. Too funny.

6:12pm PST

6:32pm PST

6:42pm PST

RIP: Heath Ledger

The first time I saw Heath Ledger was watching 10 Things I Hate About You. I was watching it because I have pretty big crush on Julia Stiles and was watching whatever movies I could find with her in it. In 10 Things Ledger plays Patrick Verona the misunderstood gentle man who inadvertently falls in love with Stiles' character. The movie based on the "Taming of the Shrew" was new age Shakespeare in the same way that Clueless was Jane Austen's "Emma". That was his start with me and I found myself enjoying many of the other movies acted in subsequently. Ledger was a good actor he played a variety of roles and did them all pretty well. Im not sure he ever played the same role twice.  He was picky, so many of his contemporaries seemed to take whatever movies were thrown at them and he was a little more choosey.  Movies like "Ned Kelley", "A Knights Tale, and " The Patriot" are favorites and  his brief stint in " Monster's Ball"  was a glimpse into what he could be.  Then his coming of age role in "Brokeback Mountain". followed by his turn in "I'm Not There" the biopic inspired by the life of Bob Dylan. He was a cross between pretty Hollywood and gritty Independence film work. He had the potential to be my generations Sean Penn without all the angry outbursts and backlash. I'm really excited to see his turn as the Joker in the Batman: The Dark Knight Returns . It seems as if he is a throwback to the Joker that Frank Miller wrote, a sadistic sociopath who knew no boundaries.  I was initially surprised at the casting of Ledger but after seeing the trailer I believe that he will pull it off well. Honestly after Brokeback I'm sure he can play anything. The rumor is that his reaction to the role may be part of his issue, that he couldn't shake the character from his own life . Method acting is what they call it, submersing yourself in a role so far that sometimes you take it home with you. Back when Hollywood was gearing up for "Hannibal" the sequel to "Silence of the Lambs" Jodie Foster turned it down because couldn't put herself through the mental rigors anymore. She spent months on a couch discussing what that movie did to her with a professional. In truth the Joker may have had nothing to do with either way its tragic that someone that young with that much talent  dies and leaves behind a little girl who will miss growing up with her father. The famous are not exempted from the human conditions that we experience they are just susceptible as the average joe, I think sometime we forget ....

Inappropriate Dinner Conversation

so lets give new meaning to talks about the birds and bees. yesterday over lunch with friends i had a conversation about compromise in marriage. my friend had previously (in high school) had a conversation with her mother about future relationships and compromise. let me preface this story by saying that i am familiar with the mother in question and her husband and while you will only hear a story i was trying to fight a visual picture. so apparently in explaining conversation my friends mother told her that (i'm cleaning this up to keep this PG) there were certain things that they couldnt do romantically because her father was above average. well.... we had a pause at our table because this was not the normal meal conversation. and i then remembered my own mother having said once that all thing are not appropriate for the dinner table, how right she was. i understand having open conversation with your kids but somethings are better left unsaid. lol.

Sarah Connor Chronicles: Pilot

i am beyond hesitant when it comes to becoming attached to new tv shows broadcast by the fox network. i have been burned many times in the recent years by becoming attached to shows that fox cancelled without much notice or without giving the shows much time. examples; drive, fastlane, true calling, dark angel, reunion, vanished, standoff, justice  and the inside. however i continue to give the the benefit of the doubt because this is the station that brought me 24 and prison break. besides its a strike year so there is really no reason not to give a new show a fair shake especially on the side of the networks because its not like there are new episodes of anything else to put on the air.
the sarah connor chronicles (scc) is a terminator spinoff that takes place in years following T2. Most people prefer to forget that T3 was ever made although i thought the movie was pretty entertaining it gave me my fist look at  kristanna loken even though i think the story was below the acting ability of claire danes but i digress. in scc john connor (thomas "i dont want to be gay on heroes" dekker) the eventual hero of mankind is in high school, and on his first day at the new school he is attacked by a terminator who of course is sent back from the future to kill him connor ends up being protected by another terminator named cameron portrayed by summer glau of firefly and serenity fame. the connors john and sarah played by lena headey (300) end up finding out that despite their efforts skynet was still deployed and mankind is still in danger. in the end the connors and cameron go forward to 2007 to stop skynet in the future still trying to save the world.
when this show was announced i wondered why the show was going to focus on sarah as opposed to john. one of the things that the show portrays much better than the movie is that john is scared of his destiny. in the movies we never get a sense that john has fully  grasped or accepted his role in the future revolution, in the tv show he both knows and has accepted his role in the future but doesn't believe that he can accomplish this. there is a point in the episode where he asks his mother to stop skynet to do it herself because he can't he is just a kid and cant do it himself. his mother then realizes that the only way she can protect her son is to do what he cant do himself.
the show looks good even if just judging by the pilot i think its going to be interesting and i hope fox leaves it on long enough to give it a fair chance.

so if in the small part of 2008 that has passed so far there was one movie that i think all people should see its JUNO. ellen page, jennifer garner (alias), justin bateman (arrested development), allison janey (west wing), michael cera (superbad, arrested development) and j.k. simmons (the closer) come together to create a remarkable cast. ellen page is probably most familiar to people as kitty pride from X-Men 2 and 3 she plays Juno a high school teenager who gets pregnant by her equally young friend (cera). and then has to go home and tell her stepmom and her father portrayed by janey and simmons. the movie takes us through Juno's decision to not have an abortion (something about fingernails and boysenberry condoms) and to give up the baby for adoption to an young couple unable to have children portrayed by garner and bateman. this movie is the perfect combination of comedy and drama juno is both real in childlike behavior and conversation as she is sometimes mature in decision making as an expectant mother. one of my favorite things about this movie is the music. juno has a very eclectic soundtrack from a lot of bands that i'm not familiar with but i enjoyed. the music is sometimes comic relief in the movie for its sheer hokiness and humor in lyrics. at 90 minutes the movie wont take up too much of your time and is the perfect length to get your attention and keep it. but you may never look at your lazyboy chair the same way again.

POEM OF THE DAY://Robert Frost "The Road Not Taken"

Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth;

Then took the other, as just as fair,
And having perhaps the better claim,
Because it was grassy and wanted wear;
Though as for that the passing there
Had worn them really about the same,

And both that morning equally lay
In leaves no step had trodden black.
Oh, I kept the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way,
I doubted if I should ever come back.

I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I—
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.
